Nashville Center for Psychoanalysis & Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Abstract by Dr. Laura Kreiselmaier:
People who are highly creative seem to have an increased propensity for mystical experience, on the one hand, and psychological suffering, on the other. Michael A. Thalbourne and colleagues’ concept of “transliminality”—the hypothesized tendency of psychological material to cross thresholds into and out of consciousness—helps corroborate and explain this observation. In my recent Religion, Psychology, & Culture PhD dissertation on "Transliminality & Transcendence," I proposed a bio-psycho-socio-spiritual model for understanding the types of phenomena that people with large amounts of transliminality often encounter and for informing a holistic, empathic, effective clinical and pastoral response.
In this program I will give an overview of what transliminality means, explain my hypothesis that it involves a combination of high sensitivity and high sensation-seeking, and discuss how understanding this type of temperament can shape our psychotherapeutic work with clients.
Laura Kreiselmaier, PhD is a holistic therapist (under supervision for licensure in Clinical Pastoral Therapy) and a 2014-16 Advanced Psychodynamic Psychotherapy training candidate. She is also a professional pianist and specializes in providing therapy to members of Nashville's creative community. After finishing her doctorate last month at Vanderbilt University in Religion, Psychology, & Culture under the direction of Dr. Volney Gay, she is transitioning into full-time private practice. In addition to transliminality and Highly Sensitive Persons, Dr. Kreiselmaier's interest in personality theory includes expertise in the Enneagram, which she has correlated with psychodynamic character types. She would welcome and appreciate referrals to her upcoming Enneagram-based interpersonal process group, cofacilitated with Doug Taylor, M.Ed., M.A.
