Why Did Dan's Therapy End Up Like This? A Case of Failed Psychotherapy

Jeffrey L. Binder, Ph.D., ABPP, Jane Weinberg, M.D., & Tom Campbell, M.D.

A case will be presented of adult individual weekly psychotherapy that lasted 26 sessions before the patient unilaterally terminated. The patient was seen in psychotherapy by Dr. Binder, and, in addition, at different times was evaluated for and treated with psychotropic medications by Dr. Campbell and by Dr. Weinberg. Each clinician will offer his or her perspective on attempts to collaboratively work with the patient. After presenting the clinical material, members of the audience will be invited to proffer their ideas and opinions about why the patient appeared to make little if any therapeutic progress and ultimately end the treatment. The treating clinicians will also offer their opinions about why the treatment failed. The case material will be introduced a brief review of research on failed by therapies and drop outs.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Introduction to research on prevalence and causes of adult individual psychotherapy failure.
  2. Introduction to research on prevalence and causes of adult individual psychotherapy drop outs.
  3. Introduction to understanding how to apply therapy research findings to answer questions about clinical events and treatment outcomes.
  4. Understanding therapy process factors that influence treatment outcome.
